pace

pace [ˈpeɪsi, ˈpɑtʃeɪ; Lat. ˈpɑkɛ] prep.

1.) By the leave of (a person). Used chiefly as a courteous or ironical apology for a contradiction or difference of opinion. Also, In Latin phrase pace tanti viri: by the leave or favour of so great a man (O.E.D. 2nd Ed.).

Etymology: Latin, ablative singular of pax, peace; as used e.g. in phrase pāce tuā, by your leave.

"Obligations happen for the while that they happen and then fade away. That is all there is to them. But that is enough. They do not need to last forever. Obligations require proper names, not, pace Lacoue-Labarthe, sacred, everlasting names, nor, pace Levinas, infinite ones." (Against Ethics: Contributions to a Poetics of Obligation with Constant Reference to Deconstruction, John D. Caputo, 1993).

(Minerva Protects Pax from Mars, Peter Paul Rubens, 1630)

I almost forgot to give a shout-out to Lemons Don't Make Lemonade, who used one of my words-of-the-day (hoi polloi) recently. She operates a highly amusing blog—with excellent diction—so you should check her out. (You'll see that my use of innuendo is very appropriate once you're there.) Thanks for reading!

Do you always post a classical/neo-classical painting with your posts? They're very nice works!

I'd never know how to use this one.
Love the illustration as always! You should post them in bigger size (you have the option in the post box).

Now I'll never be able to read the word "pace" in context of running without thinking "pay-si". Darn you heteronyms!

I saw the word first and I was like, hey that one's pretty normal

@Ala Mode 7 This is a baroque, actually, but yeah I've started posting somewhat relevant artwork just as a little aide-memoire. And, pace yourself, I think Impressionism was the death-knell of painting as an art form.

@DEZMOND ^ That's how! (Just joshing you.) Thanks for the tip; I'll try them bigger.

I love that Rubens painting. "I think Impressionism was the death-knell of painting as an art form. " I digress! More like, the computer was.

I have to add this one to my vocabulary and the art is beautiful!

For a moment I had to do a double take at the word then I realised how foolish I was being. I wonder if I can use this in my resignation letter...

courteous or ironical. They seem somewhat far apart, or is that just me?

I'm confused.

"Impressionism was the death-knell of painting as an art form"

Oh how I love you. It's a pity that Impressionists and their successors get all the publicity while academic nineteenth century painters are still largely reviled...

Hmm, I can't pronounce this correctly D:

Re: Oh no, it works, but there's something (don't know what) too different in the correct pronunciation that I can't make with my mouth, hehe.

i tend to keep my blog based on prose, i also write to keep my posts short and simple that's why the sentences are not that long. i think mainly because i'm also very influenced by haiku, a genre i'm studying lately...

love the use of this word, i thought i meant something else haha!
